Yesterday we experienced flash flooding in our home town of Evansville, IN. Are you prepared for this?
A single natural disaster can displace your family and pets, destroying businesses, homes and food supplies. Severe storms can cause landslides, flash flooding, uproot trees and take out power. When Mother Nature rears her head, do you know what to do to keep your loved ones safe? Know your neighborhood and what your flood hazards are?
- Keep a First Aid Kit
- In case of power loss, have a battery powered radio tuned to your local weather station for the latest information
- Do not drive on flooded roads
- If your car stalls, abandon it
- Do not walk through moving water. As little as six inches could cause you to fall which could be fatal. If you must walk in a flooded area, choose a spot where the water is not moving.
- Avoid water that is in contact with down power lines
- Do not allow your children to play in storm water, drains or any other flooded area.
- If you are forced to evacuate your home or business, shut off electric circuit and gas source.
- Know where emergency evacuation centers are located by contacting your local American Red Cross
Remember, in the event of a natural disaster, you cannot rely solely on emergency personnel. Take precautionary steps to keep your family safe by having an Emergency Preparedness Plan. Assign a role to each person in your family and practice the plan before it’s needed.
