Police – “You called us, but can they call you?”

burglary alarmWhen officers respond to a commercial burglary alarm, they never know what they will actually find when they arrive on scene.  At Sonitrol, our goal is to help them catch the bad guy.   But that doesn’t always happen.  That is why when we dispatch on your alarm, we first call police and then we call those on your call list.  It is VERY important that your security company can reach one of these people.  Why?  There may be damage to the property.  A window may be broken, a door kicked in beyond repair.  Or even worse, the “bad guy” got away with property.  Update your information with your security provider if you have:

  • Disconnected your home phone
  • Changed your cell phone provider
  • The authorized employee no longer works for the company

If there has been a break in, it is your responsibility to secure a broken door or window.  If any of the “bad guys” evaded police, officers will need you to list things that are missing.  Then they can get the information out to the public to help find your property as soon as possible.

Don’t leave law enforcement hanging!

Burglars don’t always use the door

Twenty five percentage of burglars use an entry other than a window or a door.  Check around your building for easy access to the roof.  Trees close to the building, fire ladders, and telephone poles can provide burglars with a secluded area to enter your building.  Burglars feel safe if they bypass the doors and motion detectors because the those alarms will only sound as they are leaving.  Consider investing in a silent system that will activate BEFORE the burglar enters the building.

Last night at 2:30 am, Sonitrol operator Tina, received an alarm from Owensville Community School in Owensville Indiana.  Police arrived to find a broken window.  One person was apprehended.  Other then the broken window, there was no property loss.

“911. What’s your emergency?” Tips to help you help them help you!

911 operatorsHave you ever had to dial 911?  If you have, you’ve probably been nervous, scared, shaken up, maybe even hurt.  In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunications week, we have put together some tips to help you, help your 911 operator get help to you.

1) Is it an emergency?  If you need law enforcement, the fire department or an ambulance, call 911.  If you need directions, call 411.

2) Listen to the questions that the 911 operator asks.  This person is trained to get specific information to help life safety respond accordingly.  Be prepared to answer these question:

A) What is the emergency?

B) Where are you?

C) Who needs help?

3)  Speak slowly and precisely.  This maybe hard to do in a stressful situation.  But the calmer you are, the quicker you can relay the information.

4)  Give the operator all the information, especially if someone is unconscious or has stopped breathing.  The 911 operator may give you instructions for immediate help that you can provide until help reaches you.

Hopefully you will never have to call 911.  But if you do, know that there is a trained person there to get you help.

Apprehension – Two arrested by EPD using Sonitrol’s school security

APPREHENSION

On Saturday, December 5th, at 6:12pm operator Kelli, dispatched the Evansville Police Department to an alarm at North High School.  Upon arriving, the police found two teenagers had jumped the fence and entered the school.  They were attempting to take a backpack “full of items”.  They were released into the custody of their parents.

Apprehension – Four arrested in Owensboro on Sonitrol alarm

APPREHENSION

Over the weekend, operator Terry, received an audio alarm at Daviess County Middle School in Owensboro KY.  The audio was coming from the nurses office.  Terry dispatched the Owensboro Police Department and notified them that there were several male voices coming from inside the building.    Terry continued to monitor and update dispatch.  Police officers and the K9 unit can be heard on the audio arriving at the scene.  Thanks to the excellent response time of the Owensboro Police Department, four juveniles were arrested.

In this instance, not only were officers notified that there was a burglary in progress, but they were also informed that there were multiple individuals and where they were located.  With this state-of-the-art technology, officers can be better prepared for what they will encounter when they arrive on scene.  If you want to help your business and our law enforcement, contact Sonitrol.

Apprehension – Owensboro PD catches a couple of turkeys!

apprehensionWhile most of us were enjoying our long Thanksgiving weekend, Owensboro Police officers and Sonitrol operators were on the job keeping community property safe.

On Saturday morning at 1:52 am, operators received an audio alarm at an Owensboro church.  Police were immediately dispatched.  At 2:02 am, Sonitrol again contacted police dispatch to let them know there was another alarm on a new door.  Operators were informed that officers were on the scene.  The key holder called to let Sonitrol know that two teenagers were apprehended and 2 more were on the run.

Verified systems are the way of the future.  They help police by reducing false alarms.  And when an alarm is verified, police are dispatched to a burglary in progress and not just another burglary alarm.   Police can respond knowing they might catch the burglar in the act.  Catching the burglar in the act, allows the property owner keep their property and limits the loss to just a broken door or window.
