Fire monitoring prevents loss of life and property!

Over the weekend, Sonitrol’s Central Station operator, DJ, received a fire alarm at an apartment complex we protect and monitor. DJ dispatched the fire department, who responded at once. Evansville Fire Department found a garbage bag smoldering due to a lit cigarette in the hallway of the building. They put it out before it grew and ventilated the apartment building. This could have been a MAJOR disaster-from loss of life or injury to property damage- had the fire system not been monitored by our 24-hour Central Station. Not only do we install commercial fire systems for housing, warehouses, medical offices, commercial businesses, and more, we monitor them, providing emergency response around the clock. Be prepared for Carbon Monoxide leaks!

Last night, our Central Station operator, DJ, received a Carbon Monoxide alarm from a residence we secure with security and fire detection. He dispatched the fire department, who responded and determined there was a Carbon Monoxide leak in the basement. The fire department contacted the gas company to meet them so that the leak could be stopped. Great job to DJ and our local fire department! Carbon Monoxide is odorless and can only be detected with the proper device. Not only does Sonitrol provide commercial security systems, but we also install and monitor commercial fire alarms. Yesterday afternoon, our Central Station operator, Maye, received a fire alarm on a parking garage we monitor. She dispatched the fire department, and they were able to extinguish an electrical fire in the stairwell of the garage. Nice work, Evansville Fire Department! Good job, Maye! Sonitrol fire systems protect schools!

Last night, our Central Station operator, Maye, received a fire alarm at Central High School and dispatched authorities. Evansville Fire Department extinguished the fire that had started in the light board inside the school’s auditorium, and no one was injured. Thank you, Evansville Fire Department, for serving our community! And nice job, Maye!

Our commitment to protecting the community began in 1969, when local dentist, Dr. William Standring, “Doc”, opened Sonitrol of Evansville. Doc’s cousin, the inventor Bob Baxter, had teamed up with a police officer in Anderson, Indiana just five years earlier and launched Sonitrol, the first of its kind verified alarm company that used audio technology to catch intruders. Unlike motion-based alarms that criminals knew how to bypass by simply stepping outside of the motion detector range, Sonitrol alarms provided wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling coverage with unique listening capabilities. This meant that if someone attempted to break-in from a non-conventional entry point, such as a ceiling or roof-top entrance, the audio sensor would hear the noise and alert the Central Station monitoring team. Doc was so impressed with this technology that he opened his own franchise in Evansville so he could provide verified alarms to the community and help police increase apprehensions.

One of Doc’s favorite memories was when the team at Sonitrol of Evansville and EPD apprehended someone entering through a local pharmacy’s roof the very first week the new Sonitrol alarm was installed. That same pharmacy had been plagued with repeated break-ins and theft up until Doc convinced them to try a Sonitrol alarm!

It is National Fire Prevention Week, and it is important to discuss fire prevention measures and safety tips with your loved ones, friends, and co-workers. 

Here are some safety tips to consider:

  1. Install smoke alarms throughout your home and business, test them once a month, and if they are not working, replace the batteries. An early warning from a regularly tested smoke alarm can save lives.
  2. Have a plan. Talk with your family, especially younger kids, about what to do if a smoke alarm goes off. Make sure you each know at least one or two ways to escape from every room in your home in the event of a fire. Do practice fire drills, and know where to meet up outside, for example, the mailbox. Have escape plans at your place of work, too. Practice getting out in less than two minutes.
  3. In the event of a fire, “Get out, and stay out.” Only professional firefighters should enter a building that is on fire. Don’t go back inside.

Since then, our location has played an essential role in achieving Sonitrol corporate’s apprehension rate of over 180,140 criminals and counting. What began as one man’s vision of helping police catch criminals has grown into a trusted family of people who value each other, their clients, and their community.
